The Unstoppables met on the first Saturday in October for a fun-filled agenda, meeting a new face, some games and a tasty lunch.

The meeting started with a catch-up of what the members have been doing since we last met up in September. It was really heartening to hear that so many members were enjoying being back in school or college, while other members had enjoyed going to concerts and spending time with their friends, moving up to senior level in bowls and one member was excited to be going on a trip to India in December.

During the update, volunteer member of the Unstoppables Nicole told us about her incredible sponsored wheel around Maidenbrook Country Park in Taunton. Nicole and members of Thrive with Cerebral Palsy wheeled around the Country Park up to 10 times on Wednesday 23 September and raised an astounding £1,765 for the group. We’re so proud of Nicole and the members of Thrive with Cerebral Palsy for this astounding achievement. If you would like to support this achievement, you can donate to the Thrive with Cerebral Palsy Just Giving page.

The main agenda item for the meeting involved filling in a questionnaire for the Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP), who wanted to know what members of the Unstoppables:

  • Liked about where they live
  • Who or what is important to them about their local area
  • What is most important to them right now
  • What helps them to feel happy, confident and like they belong
  • If there are any places, activities or situations where they don’t feel included or comfortable
  • What being active or moving looks like for them at the moment
  • What activities they enjoy and what barriers currently exist that stops them from taking part
  • If they could design the perfect activity, club or opportunity in Yeovil what it would look like

The group talked through their thoughts and experiences for each of the questions and wrote them down to share with SASP.

As this meeting will be Sian’s last full one before she goes on maternity leave, we decided to celebrate by having a bit of fun and playing some games in the afternoon. This included a very competitive game of Uno. It was a really fun end to the day.

This month’s meeting was the first full meeting that Engagement and Participation Officer Paul attended and provide support on in preparation for Sian’s maternity leave. Paul reflected on how kind, cheeky and supportive the group are and cannot wait to work with them again in November, where he will be joined by Julie.

Our next Unstoppables meeting is on Saturday 7 November in Yeovil.

Could you be an Unstoppable?

The Unstoppables is a youth voice group for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) aged 13-25 years, who live in or are educated in Somerset.

The Unstoppables help the voices and opinions of young people with SEND in Somerset be heard and to help make changes to and improve the services that they use.

We meet monthly on the first Saturday of every month in Yeovil to discuss the topics and issues that are affecting and are important to the group and other young people with SEND in Somerset.
